Garmin's 24.13 Beta Puts the Fenix 8 Pro in the Lineup, and Buries One Warning in the Post

Garmin's Fenix 8 family got its second 24.xx build on October 23, and the headline is not in the changelog. It is in the list of watches that can install it.

Beta 24.13 now covers the Fenix 8 Pro and the Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED, which were left out of the first 24.xx build. When Garmin shipped beta 24.12 on October 16, it told Pro owners their version would follow "next week." This is that week, and Garmin kept the promise.

The rest of the lineup is unchanged: Fenix 8, Fenix 8 Solar, Quatix 8, Quatix 8 Pro, Enduro 3, Tactix 8 and Fenix E, plus the D2 Mach 2 and Mach 2 Pro aviation variants.

That is the good news. The catch is buried a few paragraphs into Garmin's forum post, and no one seems to have read it.

Garmin's Own Warning: Skip This Build If You Log Indoor Climb

Here is the sentence from Garmin's announcement thread, written by Garmin-Jimmy:

We have identified an issue that could cause the device to crash when recording an Indoor Climb, this will be fixed in a future version, if you use the Indoor Climb activity type you may want to wait until the next beta release.

That is a known crash in a shipping beta, published by the company itself, in a post whose changelog does not mention it. If you train on a climbing machine and you have the beta program enabled, 24.13 has a landmine in it.

The practical read: this build fixes more than a dozen things and introduces one new known flaw. For everyone except Indoor Climb users, that trade is fine. For Indoor Climb users, it is not, and Garmin said so plainly enough that the only excuse for missing it is not reading the post.

What 24.13 Actually Fixes

Garmin's release notes list 18 changes, all of them fixes. There are no new features here, which makes sense one week after 24.12 arrived with 45 changes and 37 fixes.

The crash and freeze work is the part worth reading:

  • Devices crashing when you select the map page
  • Watches going unresponsive after long USB connections
  • Occasional crashes during track run activities
  • The screen going black when saving a point of interest
  • Distorted alarm and notification audio

The map page crash is the big one. A watch that dies when you open the map is a watch that dies exactly when you need a route, and that bug reported widely enough through the 23.xx cycle that it shows up in the fix list twice in two builds.

There is a long tail of smaller fixes that will matter to specific owners:

  • Heart rate broadcasting no longer stops after Bluetooth is turned off
  • Heart rate graphs now populate correctly in activity summaries
  • Move alerts clear from the notification center properly
  • Streak alerts stop replacing goal alerts during activities
  • Average grade adjusted pace fields fill in again
  • Dive entry and exit points are accurate for single and apnea dives
  • The "Iron Portal" watch face shows all its data fields
  • The "Display Settings" shortcut opens the right menu
  • The address search magnifier works
  • Map themes change when you ask them to, and stray coordinate text no longer appears on map pages
  • The decimal picker no longer appears when editing pack weight on models that cannot take decimals
  • The NTN "try again" screen buttons respond

How the Rollout Works This Time

Garmin says 24.13 is available over the air and that the rollout is at 100 percent. That is a change from 24.12, which Garmin delivered through Check for Updates rather than a standard push. Enrolled beta users should see 24.13 arrive on its own over Wi-Fi or through Garmin Connect Mobile, with a manual Check for Updates as the fallback.

After the update, the watch reports software 24.13, GPS 11.04 (16.01 on the Fenix E), wireless 29.27 and sensor hub 41.02. You can confirm all of it under Menu, then System, then About.

Two caveats have not changed:

  • ECG and Dive are still disabled on Fenix 8 series beta software. Garmin enables them again toward the end of each quarterly beta cycle, when a build is close to going live. If you rely on either feature, stay off the beta.
  • Backdating has a cost. If you roll back to stable, your watch will not offer the same beta build again. You will sit on the old version until a newer beta appears.

Why This Branch Matters

The Fenix 8 line had a rough autumn. Version 23.39 shipped as a feature release and killed the optical heart rate sensor on a batch of watches. Version 23.40 arrived on October 13 to repair that, and it looked like the cleanup release everyone wanted.

Eight days later, Garmin cut over to 24.xx anyway. Two builds in, the pattern is clear: 24.12 swept up the accumulated crash reports from the whole 23 cycle, and 24.13 is the polish pass on top of it, now extended to the most expensive watches Garmin sells.

If you own a Fenix 8 Pro, this is the first beta that applies to you at all. If you own an Enduro 3 or a Tactix 8 and you have been waiting for the branch to settle, note that stable is still 23.40. Nothing has been promoted yet, and Garmin has not said when that will happen.

Beta builds are for people who want to find bugs and report them. If that is not you, and especially if it is not you and you climb indoors, the stable release is still the right answer.

Bottom Line

18 fixes, no features, and the Pro models finally included: 24.13 is an ordinary maintenance build that happens to contain one known crash, and Garmin told you about it in the least prominent place possible. Indoor Climb users should wait. Everyone else on the beta track can install it and expect a slightly less irritating watch, with ECG and Dive still sitting out until the branch goes live.

Our earlier coverage of the 23.39 heart rate sensor failure, the 23.40 fix and beta 24.12 supplies the context for why this branch restarted. Garmin has not published a stable release date for 24.xx and has not said how long the Indoor Climb crash will persist beyond "a future version."
