Apple shipped the microphone feature it has been teasing since September, and it did it quietly, inside a developer beta.
The first watchOS 27.3 beta went out to developers today, and it switches on two Audio Intelligence tools: Siri Recap and Live Rewind. Both were announced alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 in September, with Apple saying only that they would arrive "in beta later this year." That beta is now.
If you own anything older than this year's two watches, none of this reaches you. Apple is gating both features on the S11 chip, and we will get to why in a minute.
What Siri Recap actually does
Siri Recap is the bigger of the two. Once you turn it on, the watch listens to conversations around you through the day. After a conversation ends, Apple Intelligence generates a title and a set of key points, then files them in the new Siri app. The pitch is memory support: you were present for the conversation, and now you have notes.
Apple's own description, from the release notes, frames it as being able to "create high-level summaries of conversations that users can review later to jog their memory."
There is no published limit on how long a conversation can run before a recap fires. That is the part people are going to argue about, and the part Apple has not answered beyond its privacy documentation.
Live Rewind is the 15-second version
Live Rewind is smaller and, honestly, more useful in daily life. Double press the Digital Crown and the watch shows the previous 15 seconds of whatever was just said as a text snippet.
From there you can ask Siri about it, or save the snippet to the Siri app for later. The use case Apple keeps pushing is catching a name, a number, or a street you missed in the moment.
Two details Apple did disclose that matter more than they sound:
- A chime plays whenever Live Rewind is active, and it plays regardless of Focus modes or silent mode. There is no fully silent version of this feature.
- The transcript is a snippet, not a recording. Apple is not handing you an audio file to replay.
The hardware line Apple drew
Both features require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4. Apple attributes that to the S11 chip, which carries a Secure Exclave dedicated to processing audio in isolation.
Your phone matters too. The watch has to be paired to an iPhone 16 or newer, and the iPhone 16e is explicitly excluded.
That is a narrow supported set for a feature Apple spent a chunk of its September event on. Series 11, Ultra 3, and every older watch are out, which is a faster cutoff than we usually see from Apple on health and fitness features.
If you are weighing an upgrade, the Series 12 is the cheapest path into Audio Intelligence. Apple Watch Series 12 on Amazon is where most buyers will land, and the Ultra 4 is the option if battery life and the bigger display carry more weight for you than price.
The privacy claim, in Apple's own terms
Apple published a Audio Intelligence privacy overview alongside the beta, and the claims are specific enough to quote.
Raw audio, per Apple, "is handled within dedicated hardware, is not saved as a file, and is not accessible to the operating system, apps, or Apple." That last part is the interesting one. Even the OS does not get the audio stream, which is the whole reason for the Secure Exclave.
Saved summaries and snippets are a different story. If you use iCloud with two-factor authentication and have a device passcode set, anything you save syncs across your devices end to end encrypted inside the Siri app.
So the design is: audio stays in silicon, text rides in your iCloud. Whether that is enough depends on how you feel about a watch that is transcribing the room, which is a question we dug into when Audio Intelligence first surfaced in September, in Apple's New Watch Listens All Day. The Real Question Is Consent.
The rest of the 27.3 beta
Audio Intelligence is not the only thing in this build.
- The redesigned Health app is now in testing on the iOS 27.3 side, with a new Insights tab that surfaces summaries for heart, sleep, and fitness data through the day, plus a For You section with personalized recommendations.
- Siri's language support expands to global English, Chinese in both Simplified and Traditional, French, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
- The usual round of bug fixes and under-the-hood work that never makes the release notes.
That Health app redesign is worth flagging for a different reason, and it is the reason we are not calling any of this shipped yet.
Beta is not release
Apple has a habit of testing features and then holding them back from the final build. The Health app redesign was in the iOS 27.2 beta and did not make the public 27.2 release. watchOS 27.3 is expected to land for everyone in December, and there is no guarantee Siri Recap and Live Rewind survive the trip.
There is also the open question of whether this stays limited to two watch models forever, or whether Apple widens it once the S11 hardware spreads across the lineup. Historically, features that lean on a specific chip do not backfill. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are likely to be the only watches with Audio Intelligence for a generation.
Bottom Line
Apple just turned the always-listening watch from a promise into something developers can test, and the engineering is more careful than the marketing suggests. Audio never becomes a file, even the OS cannot read it, and Live Rewind announces itself with a chime you cannot silence.
What is missing is the part users will ask about first: how long a "conversation" can run, how many recaps pile up in a day, and what happens when someone else in the room has not agreed to any of this. Apple has answered the storage question and left the social one alone.
If you have a Series 12 or an Ultra 4 and you are on the developer beta, the features are live now. Everyone else is watching from the outside until December at the earliest.
