The Galaxy Watch 9 went on sale August 7, 2026, the same day as the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and the new foldable phones. Pre-orders opened the moment Samsung finished the Unpacked keynote on July 22.
The timeline matched our pre-launch reporting almost exactly. Samsung skipped the Classic model this year (there was no Classic in the FCC filings either), so the lineup is just the standard Watch 9 and the Ultra 2.
Price: From $379.99, Up $30 Across the Board
Pricing is $30 higher than the Watch 8 at every tier:

The price hike stings a little, and it matters because the Watch 8 has already dropped to around $220 on Amazon. More on that below, because it changes who should buy which watch.

Here is the honest summary of the Galaxy Watch 9: same design, same display, same sensors, one major change under the hood.
Snapdragon Wear Elite: First for Both Models
The biggest story is the processor. For the first time, Samsung dropped its in-house Exynos chips and put Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Elite in both the Watch 9 and the Watch Ultra 2.
This is a 3nm chip with a dedicated AI processor capable of running on-device models with up to 2 billion parameters. Samsung says that powers Gemini voice queries, on-watch transcription, and smarter health recommendations. In hands-on coverage, reviewers consistently called the interface noticeably smoother than last year's.
There was a rumor during the leak cycle that only the Ultra 2 would get the new chip. Samsung settled that at Unpacked: both watches share it.
Battery: The 40mm Gets the Upgrade
The 40mm Watch 9 jumped to a 390mAh battery, a 20% increase over the Watch 8's 325mAh cell. The 44mm moved to 449mAh, a smaller bump. Samsung rates both sizes at roughly 30 hours with always-on display enabled.
Real world, you are still charging daily. But the smaller model's battery bump should make it noticeably more forgiving than the Watch 8 was.
Display and Design: Unchanged
Same squircle body, same sizes, same Super AMOLED panels (1.34-inch on the 40mm, 1.47-inch on the 44mm), same 3,000 nits peak brightness, same IP68 and 5ATM ratings. The colors are Cream and Graphite for the 40mm, Graphite and Silver for the 44mm. Cream is the only new finish.
Health Sensors: All Carryover
The BioActive Sensor suite returns unchanged: optical heart rate, electrical heart signal, bioelectrical impedance, temperature, plus the usual accelerometer and gyro stack. Blood pressure measurement, sleep apnea detection, and the new Vitals overnight check all work as they did on the Watch 8.
One software note worth knowing: several of the newer health features that previewed in Samsung Health in June (Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load, Fitness Index, Hearing Health) arrive with the new watch, and some of them require the new hardware rather than coming back to older Galaxy Watches.
Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: The More Interesting Launch
If you are spending $699.99 on a Samsung watch, the Ultra 2 is where the real upgrades landed. It gets a 5,000-nit display, an 800mAh battery (35% bigger than the original Ultra), a 12% thinner and 25% lighter titanium body, and new outdoor features: Trail Run mode, hydration guidance, and Mares diving support later this year.

Should You Buy It?
If you own a Galaxy Watch 8: skip it. Same design, same display, same sensors. The new chip is nice on paper but will not transform your daily use. Wait for reviews to mature or catch the Watch 8 at its current discount.
If you own a Watch 6 or older: yes, this is a solid upgrade. Modern design, brighter and bigger displays, better battery (especially in the 40mm), and the full Wear OS 7 plus Gemini experience.
If you are cross-shopping the Apple Watch Series 11: the Watch 9 is priced right in the fight. Apple still has the edge in health sensor depth and third-party apps; Samsung wins on battery flexibility and the value of the older Watch 8 at its new street price.
