Google just took the wraps off the Pixel Watch 5 at Made by Google 2026, and for once the headline isn't the design or the AI assistant. It's the GPS.
Google claims the new watch delivers "2x greater accuracy" in tough environments and, more provocatively, that it outperforms the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro on route tracking. Those are the two watches serious athletes actually buy, and they cost up to twice as much.
Pre-orders open today, August 12, with the watch hitting shelves August 20, starting at $399 for the 41mm and $429 for the 45mm. Here's everything that's new, and a deep look at how Google pulled off its GPS claims.
What's New on the Pixel Watch 5
Let's get the spec sheet out of the way first, because the watch itself is more evolution than revolution.
Hardware:
- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated with a power-efficient dual-chip architecture. Despite months of rumors pointing at a custom Tensor chip, Google stuck with Qualcomm. The result: 12% more CPU performance, 50% more RAM (2GB to 3GB), doubled storage (32GB to 64GB), and a claimed 20% faster overall experience.
- Display: The same gorgeous domed Actua 360 LTPO AMOLED from the Pixel Watch 4. 3,000 nits peak brightness, 320 ppi, Gorilla Glass 5, in the same 41mm and 45mm sizes.
- Battery: Up to 30 hours on the 41mm and 40 hours on the 45mm, the same rated life as the Pixel Watch 4. The cell is slightly larger (465 mAh versus 455 mAh on the 45mm), and Google says the extra capacity mostly goes to feeding new AI features like offline Gemini. Fast charging gets you 15 hours of use from a 15-minute top-up on the Quick Charge Dock.
- Design: Essentially unchanged. Same bezel-free circular look, rotating crown, and side button. New colors include Fog, Olive, Canyon (41mm exclusive), and a new satin Pyrite housing, a gold-and-silver blend.
- Durability: 5ATM water resistance plus IP68, and Google continues to push its repairable architecture.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, LTE options, and satellite SOS carried over from the Pixel Watch 4.
Software and health:
- Wear OS 7 out of the box, positioning the watch as the hub for Google's wearable ecosystem, including Pixel Buds, smart glasses, and the new Pixel Tag trackers.
- Gemini everywhere. Raise to Talk now handles core actions offline, a new "At a Glance" feature surfaces context-aware info like boarding passes and commute stops, and Proactive Suggestions can dig through your calendar and Gmail to answer questions before you ask. With a Pixel 11, it can even draft automatic text replies.
- Strength training finally gets real. A new workout builder lets you create structured strength sessions in the Google Health app (or have Google Health Coach generate them), then the watch guides you through every set with rep and weight tracking, audio cues, and rest timers.
- Better sleep tracking. Google claims 15% more accurate sleep stage detection, plus a new bedtime mode with a dedicated watch face, a Smart Wake alarm that finds lighter sleep in the 30 minutes before your alarm, and a new overnight breathing quality metric.
- Health Guardian. This is Google's new umbrella for safety and long-term health features. It adds Breathing Emergency Detection, an industry-first that watches for severe, persistent drops in blood oxygen (from choking, pneumonia, or drug toxicity) and can automatically call emergency services, launching first in Europe. Later this fall, monthly trend reports for blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance arrive via software update. Worth noting: those trend features are not FDA-cleared and don't launch with the watch.
- New watch faces: two standard ones, 11 new complication styles, and generative AI watch faces where you describe a theme and the watch builds it.
There's also a Stephen Curry Special Edition (45mm, $579) with an exclusive sweat-wicking performance loop band, arriving September 3.
If you followed our FCC preview from July, most of the connectivity predictions landed: all models carry LTE-capable hardware, satellite SOS, UWB, and Wi-Fi 6.
The GPS Claim: 2x More Accurate, and Better Than Apple and Garmin
Here's the part that matters. Google makes two specific claims about the Pixel Watch 5 GPS:
- 2x more accurate route mapping in tough environments compared to previous Pixel Watch generations.
- The most accurate GPS route tracking for exercise, outperforming the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro.
That second claim is extraordinary. The Fenix 8 Pro and Ultra 3 are the gold standards for GPS accuracy in the sports watch world. So how does a $399 lifestyle smartwatch beat them?
The short answer: not with better hardware, but with better data.
How It Works: Three Fixes for the Three Ways GPS Breaks
The Pixel Watch 5 uses the same dual-band GNSS hardware as the Pixel Watch 4, with only minor antenna tweaks. The magic is in post-processing, and it targets the three classic GPS failure modes:
1. Urban canyons (tall buildings). This is the big one. Skyscrapers don't just block satellite signals. They reflect them off glass and metal, so your watch receives a bounced signal and thinks you're somewhere you're not. Engineers call these multi-path errors, and they're why your GPS track weaves through buildings in downtown areas.
Google's fix leverages its secret weapon: the Google Maps database. The watch traces satellite ray paths through Google's 3D building models, which know the exact height and location of essentially every structure on Earth. If the watch thinks it can see a satellite that's actually behind a 40-story tower, the system knows that signal must be a reflection, deprioritizes it, and reprocesses your track using only the satellites you can genuinely see.
2. Terrain blockages. Cliffs, mountains, and heavy tree cover limit which satellites are visible. The same 3D modeling applies to natural terrain, not just buildings.
3. Atmospheric interference. Heavy clouds, rain, and storms slow and bend GPS signals. Google taps a global network of real-time reference stations to measure current atmospheric conditions at your exact location, then applies DGNSS-style corrections to your file.
Finally, signal fusion ties it together. The watch already blends GPS with accelerometer and gyroscope data on-device, but the Pixel Watch 5 reprocesses everything again in the cloud with the 3D models and weather corrections layered on top.
Two important caveats. First, this is post-processing. Your track gets cleaned up after your workout, not in real time while you run. Second, it applies to walking, running, hiking, and cycling activities. Open-water swimming and other sport modes don't benefit yet.
And if you're wondering whether this is just road-snapping in disguise, like some competitors use: it's not. DC Rainmaker specifically tried to trick it with off-road detours and weird routes, and the processing followed his actual path instead of gluing him to the nearest sidewalk.
The Real-World Test: NYC, the Toughest GPS Environment on Earth
DC Rainmaker flew to New York City with a Pixel Watch 5, a Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, and an Apple Watch Ultra 3, and spent hours running and cycling through Manhattan trying to break all three. His verdict: he mostly broke the Garmin and Apple tracks, not Google's.
The highlights from his testing:
- Times Square: With massively tall buildings on both sides, the Pixel Watch 5 kept him on the correct sidewalk side while Apple's track wandered into buildings and Garmin's sat in the middle of the road.
- The trick loop: He ran a tight circle around a building in the center of Times Square. Google was closest to correct, Apple drew a straight mark across the building, and Garmin produced what he called "the 4yo toddler version."
- The circle in the street: He literally ran a circle in the middle of a closed street. Google nailed it. Apple decided no sane person would do that and snapped him to the sidewalk.
- The bridge walk: He stopped, walked under a bridge, crossed the street, and doubled back. Google tracked the whole oddball sequence correctly while Apple ignored it entirely.
It wasn't perfect. A block here and there, Google put him inside a building where Apple got it right, and on one bridge bike lane the Ultra 3 placed him more precisely. But the pattern was consistent: the Pixel Watch 5 turned "meh-good-enough" tracks into near-perfect ones, block after block.
As for Google's 2x number, it's based on runs and rides alongside centimeter-accurate reference GPS backpacks (the same ground-truth rigs every watch company uses), comparing the average distance of every track point from the true path. Rainmaker's read: the advantage is probably bigger in dense cities like NYC and smaller in open farmland.
One honest caveat: all that cloud reprocessing means your raw GPS data goes through Google's servers before you see the cleaned-up track. If you're particular about where your workout data lives, that's worth knowing.
Could this come to the Pixel Watch 4? Google hasn't confirmed it, but Rainmaker points out nothing in the tech stops it, since last year's watch already has dual-band GNSS and the Watch 5's antenna tweaks are minor. His read: expect it to land on older Pixel Watches a few months after launch, the way Google usually handles feature backports.

That's $50 more than the Pixel Watch 4 launched at for the 41mm, the first price increase in the Pixel Watch line. Google is sweetening the deal with up to $400 in trade-in credit and three months of Google Health Premium free.
Bottom Line
The Pixel Watch 5 is an iterative upgrade in almost every way except one. Same design, same display, slightly bigger battery, faster chip. If you own a Pixel Watch 4 and don't care about GPS, this is an easy skip, especially since many of the health features are coming to older watches via software updates.
But the GPS story is genuinely different. Google used the one asset no watchmaker can match, its mapping data, to solve the urban accuracy problem that has plagued every GPS watch for decades. Early hands-on testing from the toughest environment on the planet backs up most of the hype.
