Samsung just launched the Galaxy Watch 9 with a suite of new AI-powered health features. Fitness Index. Cardio Load. Vitals monitoring. Hearing health. It's an impressive list, and Samsung is clearly betting that more health data equals a better smartwatch experience.
But there's one feature Garmin has had for nearly a decade that Samsung still hasn't properly answered: Body Battery.
Samsung has its own equivalent called Energy Score. On paper, they sound similar — both give you a number that's supposed to represent how much energy you have to spend. In practice, they work fundamentally differently, and the difference matters more than you'd think.
What Is Garmin Body Battery?
Garmin introduced Body Battery in 2017, and it's become one of the most beloved features in the entire Garmin ecosystem. The concept is simple: your body has a charge level, just like a battery. It ranges from 0 to 100.
When you sleep, your Body Battery charges up. When you exercise, stress, or push yourself, it drains. When you rest or nap, it partially recharges. The number updates continuously throughout the day based on what your body is actually doing.
The underlying technology pulls from multiple data streams:
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV): The primary signal. HRV measures the variation between heartbeats, which is a strong indicator of autonomic nervous system activity. High HRV generally means your body is in recovery mode. Low HRV means stress or exertion.
- Sleep quality: How well you slept, including time spent in deep and REM sleep, directly impacts how much your Body Battery recharges overnight.
- Stress tracking: Garmin's stress metric, also derived from HRV, feeds into Body Battery. High stress periods drain the battery faster.
- Activity data: Workouts and physical exertion subtract from your current charge.
The key differentiator is that Body Battery is dynamic. It's not a morning number that stays fixed all day. If you go for a hard run at noon, you'll see your Body Battery drop shortly after. If you take a 20-minute nap on the couch, you'll see it tick back up. It reflects what's happening to your body in near-real-time.
This creates something genuinely useful: energy budgeting. If you wake up at a 45 instead of your usual 70, you know to take it easier. If you're at 80 in the afternoon and feeling good, you know you can push harder. The score rolls over from day to day, so a bad night of sleep doesn't just affect one day's number — it compounds.
What Is Samsung Energy Score?
Samsung introduced Energy Score with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra in 2025 as part of Samsung Health's broader AI push. Like Body Battery, it gives you a number from 0 to 100 that's supposed to represent your daily readiness.
Energy Score pulls from these data points:
- Sleep data: This is the heaviest weighted factor. Duration, sleep stages, and sleep consistency all feed into the score.
- Activity levels: How much you moved yesterday and over the past week.
- Heart rate metrics: Resting heart rate and overnight patterns.
- Heart rate variability: Samsung Health tracks HRV during sleep and factors it in.
So far, so similar. But here's where Energy Score differs from Body Battery in ways that matter:
Energy Score updates once per day. You get your score in the morning, and it stays the same until the next morning. It doesn't matter if you run a marathon at noon or take a three-hour nap — your score doesn't budge.
Energy Score is sleep-heavy. The weighting leans heavily on sleep metrics. If you had a rough night, your score will be low regardless of how you actually feel during the day. And if you slept great but had a brutal workout the day before, your score might not reflect that until tomorrow.
Energy Score doesn't let you "recharge." Because it's static, there's no concept of midday recovery. A nap doesn't boost your score. A stressful meeting doesn't drain it. The number you wake up with is the number you're stuck with.
With the Galaxy Watch 9, Samsung has expanded its health metrics significantly. The new Fitness Index gives you a daily overall fitness assessment. Cardio Load tracks how hard your heart is working across workouts. Heart Health Score synthesizes blood pressure, sleep quality, and other metrics into a simple indicator. These are genuinely useful additions, but they're additional scores layered on top of Energy Score — not improvements to how Energy Score itself works.
The Core Difference: Static vs Dynamic
This is the whole ballgame.
Imagine checking your phone's battery percentage once in the morning and that number staying frozen all day regardless of how much you use your phone. That's Energy Score. Now imagine a battery percentage that updates every few minutes based on actual usage — draining when you open apps, recharging when you plug in. That's Body Battery.
The practical difference shows up in everyday scenarios:
The morning workout question. You wake up, check your score, and head out for a run. With Body Battery, you finish the run and immediately see the impact — maybe you dropped from 75 to 55. You know you need to eat well and rest before pushing hard again. With Energy Score, your score is unchanged. You won't know the cost of that run until tomorrow morning.
The afternoon decision. It's 3 PM and a friend invites you to play tennis. With Body Battery, you glance at your wrist — you're at 40, so you know to take it easy or skip it. With Energy Score, you have the same number you had at 7 AM. It can't help you make that decision.
The nap test. You're exhausted, so you sleep for 30 minutes on the couch. Body Battery ticks up — maybe from 30 to 45. You feel more energized, and the data confirms it. Energy Score doesn't move. Tomorrow morning, your score might be higher because of the extra rest, but today's number is locked.
The bad sleep recovery. You slept terribly and woke up at a 38 on Body Battery. But you take it easy during the day, get some rest, and by evening you've climbed back to 55. The dynamic tracking shows you're recovering. Energy Score gave you a low number in the morning and that's all you get — no indication of whether you're bouncing back or spiraling.
But Is Body Battery Actually Accurate?
This is the fair question. Quantifying something as subjective as "how much energy you have" is inherently imprecise. No wearable can perfectly measure how you feel.
Garmin's approach isn't perfect. The score can be thrown off by:
- Sensor noise: A loose strap or poor contact can produce bad HRV data, which cascades into inaccurate Body Battery readings.
- Individual variation: HRV baselines differ significantly between individuals. What looks like a low HRV for one person might be perfectly normal for another, and the algorithm has to learn your baseline over time.
- External factors: Caffeine, illness, alcohol, and stress all affect HRV in ways that might not match how you actually feel. Three cups of coffee might tank your HRV — and your Body Battery — while you feel completely fine.
But here's the thing: the same limitations apply to Energy Score. Samsung uses the same underlying signals (HRV, heart rate, sleep), just processed differently and presented less frequently.
The advantage Body Battery has isn't necessarily better accuracy — it's better utility. A number that updates throughout the day is simply more useful than one that doesn't, even if both numbers are equally imperfect measures of something that can't be perfectly measured.
Anecdotally, the most common user feedback across forums, Reddit, and reviews is consistent: Body Battery tends to correlate well with how people actually feel throughout the day. Energy Score tends to be a decent morning check-in but doesn't help much beyond that.
What About the Galaxy Watch 9's New Metrics?
Samsung clearly recognizes the gap. The Galaxy Watch 9's expanded health suite adds several metrics that attempt to fill in the picture:
- Fitness Index: An overall daily fitness score that synthesizes multiple health signals. Think of it as a broader readiness metric.
- Cardio Load: Tracks cumulative cardiovascular strain across workouts. Useful for athletes managing training stress.
- Heart Health Score: Combines blood pressure trends, sleep quality, and other cardiovascular metrics into an easy-to-understand indicator.
- AI-powered insights: Samsung Health now uses AI to provide narrative explanations of your data — "Your sleep quality was lower than usual, which may affect your Energy Score."
These are genuinely valuable. Cardio Load in particular is the kind of metric that training-focused users have been wanting on Wear OS for years.
But here's the problem: more scores don't equal more clarity. Instead of one number that dynamically reflects your body's state throughout the day (Body Battery), Samsung now has Energy Score, Fitness Index, Cardio Load, Heart Health Score, and Daily Vitals. Each one captures a piece of the picture. None of them work together to give you the real-time, holistic energy picture that Body Battery provides.
Garmin's philosophy is the opposite: one number, continuously updated, easy to understand and act on. You can dig deeper into Training Readiness, HRV Status, Sleep Score, and Stress if you want — but Body Battery is the headline metric that ties everything together.
Samsung's approach gives you more data points. Garmin's gives you more actionable insight. Those aren't the same thing.
The Ecosystem Factor
There's one more consideration: where you live, data-wise.
Garmin Body Battery is available on nearly every Garmin watch released since 2017, from the $169 Forerunner 70 to the $999 Fenix 8 Pro. It works through Garmin Connect, which is free with no subscription. If you're in the Garmin ecosystem, you have Body Battery. Period.
Samsung Energy Score requires a Samsung Galaxy Watch (Watch 7 or later) and Samsung Health. It's free, but you're locked into Samsung's ecosystem. Energy Score also benefits from Samsung Health's broader integration with Galaxy phones, which means it can pull in data from other Samsung health devices like blood pressure monitors and scales.
Garmin's wider device support means Body Battery is available to more people at more price points. Samsung's tighter ecosystem integration means Energy Score can theoretically pull from a wider range of health inputs — but in practice, the score still suffers from the static-update problem regardless of how much data feeds into it.
The Verdict
Samsung has made real strides with its health platform. The Galaxy Watch 9 is the best Wear OS watch for health features, and the new metrics are genuinely useful additions. Samsung Health has become a strong competitor to Garmin Connect in breadth, if not yet in depth.
But Body Battery remains the gold standard for energy tracking, and it's not particularly close.
The reason is simple: your body doesn't operate on a 24-hour cycle. You don't wake up with a fixed amount of energy that lasts until tomorrow. You drain and recharge throughout the day based on what you do, how you feel, what you eat, how stressed you are, and how well you slept. Body Battery reflects that reality. Energy Score doesn't.
Samsung could close this gap. The hardware and sensors are capable — the Galaxy Watch 9 has the same BioActive sensor array as the Ultra 2, and the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip has more than enough processing power to handle continuous scoring updates. The limitation isn't technical. It's philosophical.
Until Samsung decides that Energy Score should update throughout the day — responding to workouts, naps, stress, and recovery in real time — Body Battery will remain the feature that keeps Garmin users from switching.
