Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 9 at Apple Park, and from the outside you would not be able to tell them apart from the models they replace. If you read our pre-event breakdown, most of it held up.
That's not a knock. Both watches keep their cases, their sizes, and their prices. Everything worth paying for this year happens inside, and the short version is that Apple finally fixed the chip it had been coasting on since 2023.
The S11 Is the First Real Chip Upgrade in Three Years
This is the headline, and it's worth being precise about how long it's been.
The Series 11 reused the S10, which was essentially the same silicon as the S9 from the Apple Watch Series 9. That's three generations of watches sharing one architecture. The S11 breaks the streak, and Apple calls it its most powerful wearable chip.
More importantly, the S11 isn't just a speed bump. It powers the new Health Sensing System, which is where most of this year's actual feature work lives. Apple is tying the best new health feature specifically to this chip, and that matters for anyone thinking about an upgrade.
Same Case, Different Materials
The Series 12 uses the same case Apple introduced with the Series 10 in 2024. That's the third year on this design, and Apple typically runs a chassis for three generations, so a 2027 refresh is the one to wait for if looks are your thing.
Two material changes stand out:
- Ceramic is back as a case option at the top of the range, sitting above titanium, in pearl white and night blue. Apple hasn't offered a ceramic Apple Watch since 2020.
- Aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple rates as 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on the Series 11.
Touch ID was rumored for months. It did not ship.
Health Tracking Gets a Continuous Heart Rate
The sensor story is less about new hardware than about how often it's sampling.
The heart-rate sensor now collects readings continuously through the day, not only during workouts. HRV is measured as often as every five minutes, which Apple says is 24 times more often than before. Apple is also claiming the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, backed by a study of over 1,000 participants.
Then there's Readiness, a daily 0-10 score built from recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score. It hands you one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
If that format sounds familiar, it should. Garmin has run Training Readiness for years, and Whoop built an entire subscription business on the same idea. Apple is now doing it natively, which is a problem for anyone charging monthly for a recovery score.
One catch: Readiness is tied to the S11 chip, so Ultra 3 owners won't get it through the watchOS 27 update.
Audio Intelligence Is the New Category
This is the feature set Apple spent the most stage time on, and it's genuinely new ground for the watch.
- Live Rewind shows the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text after a double press of the Digital Crown. It plays a chime and shows an on-screen microphone indicator so people nearby know it's running, which is a smart way to handle the obvious privacy objection.
- Siri Recap summarizes a conversation after the fact.
- Sound Recognition flags sirens, alarms, and doorbells.
Live Rewind, Siri Recap, and the redesigned Health app all arrive in beta later this year, so don't buy on these alone. The Health app rebuild adds a Longevity tab and a Health Age readout that compares your metrics against your actual age.
Ultra 4: Battery Is the Whole Story
The Ultra 4 keeps the case Apple has used since 2022, in natural and black titanium, and runs the same S11. The design hasn't moved. The runtime has.
- 50 hours of everyday use, up from 45, which gets you past two days
- 84 hours in Low Power Mode
- 15 minutes of charging returns up to 18 hours
- Extended Workout tracks with full GPS and heart rate for up to 25 hours, a 25% jump over the Ultra 3
- Max Extended Workout stretches runs, walks, and hikes to 45 hours with a GPS reading every second
Apple says that last mode is enough to finish a 100-mile race, and it's the clearest Ultra-only advantage in the lineup. The Ultra 4 also gets new optical and electrical heart sensors, a heart rate reading every five seconds, HRV as often as every five minutes, and the same Audio Intelligence features as the Series 12.
Apple is also claiming the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch and the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch. Those are marketing claims until independent testing lands, and this is exactly the category where Garmin and COROS have spent years earning credibility with runners. We'll be watching the third-party accuracy tests closely.
What Didn't Change
- Satellite is unchanged. Emergency SOS, Find My, and messaging over satellite all carry over on Globalstar, free for two years from activation. Nothing new was added, despite the rumors.
- No new Apple Watch SE. The SE 3 remains the cheapest way into the lineup.
- Series 12 everyday battery is still 24 hours. Outdoor workouts improved to 10 hours, 25% better than the Series 11, and 15 minutes of charging adds up to 12 hours. But if all-day battery is your priority, plenty of Garmin and Amazfit watches still beat this comfortably.
Price and Availability
- Apple Watch Series 12: from $399 for the 42mm aluminum model, unchanged from the Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: from $799, unchanged from the Ultra 3
- Pre-orders: open now
- Shipping: September 18
- watchOS 27: lands September 14
Bottom Line
Apple shipped a spec-sheet upgrade that is actually an architecture upgrade. The S11 gives the Watch its first genuinely new chip since 2023, and the Health Sensing System plus Readiness turn the Watch into a recovery-tracking device that competes directly with Garmin and Whoop instead of just counting your rings.
If you own a Series 10 or Series 11, the case is identical and everyday battery hasn't moved, so this is a considered upgrade rather than an obvious one. If you own an Ultra 2, the jump to 50 hours of normal use, 45 hours of second-by-second GPS, and the new heart sensors is the most substantial Ultra upgrade yet.
The honest read: this is the year Apple caught up on silicon and used it to go after training readiness. It is not the year the Apple Watch becomes a battery champion.
