Garmin spent a decade licensing a ballistics solver for its tactical watches. On September 16, it stopped renting and bought the building.
Garmin acquired Applied Ballistics LLC, the Michigan company whose ballistic research and projectile data sit inside the Garmin Foretrex 701 and the tactix line's Ballistics Edition. Financial terms were not disclosed. Brad Trenkle, Garmin's co-chief operating officer, described it as the natural next step after a relationship "spanning nearly 10 years."
That framing is accurate and understates what Garmin just bought, because Applied Ballistics was never a Garmin supplier. It was the industry's supplier.
What Garmin Actually Acquired
Applied Ballistics was founded in 2009 by Bryan Litz, with a stated mission to be "the complete and unbiased source of external ballistics information for long-range shooters." The company is headquartered in Howard City, Michigan, and built a business on professional-grade ballistic solvers and radar-validated projectile models for hunters, competitive shooters and long-range competitors.
Its products include the Applied Ballistics Point Mass Solver, the central calculation engine, along with AB Analytics for desktop and the Applied Ballistics Quantum app, a solver and profile management platform for iOS and Android that Garmin's release specifically highlighted.
Garmin's release also says the acquisition "extends Garmin's ability to provide comprehensive solutions for customers across its tactical, shooting sports and hunting markets," and that bringing the teams together will let Garmin "accelerate innovation and deliver even more capable, integrated solutions." What it does not say is what happens to everyone else licensing the solver.
The Solver Is Not Only in Garmin Watches
Look at Applied Ballistics' own partner list and the shape of the company becomes obvious. Its solver is embedded in hardware from a long list of companies, most of which are not Garmin:
- Kestrel Ballistic Weather Meters, made by Nielsen-Kellerman, in a partnership dating to 2013, with the Kestrel Shooter's Weather Meter with Applied Ballistics shipping that July
- Sig Sauer BDX laser rangefinders and riflescopes, starting with the KILO2400ABS, which embedded Applied Ballistics Elite with onboard environmental sensors
- Bushnell Nitro 1800 and the Bushnell-linked Kestrel Sportsman kit
- The RAPTAR-S, a weapon-mounted laser rangefinder with an integrated Applied Ballistics solver
- The DARPA Computational Weapon Optic
- Garmin's Foretrex 701, and the tactix line's Ballistics Edition with the Applied Ballistics Elite solver
There are also software integrations: Kestrel LiNK Ballistics, the Sig Sauer BDX app, Bushnell Ballistics, and hardware partners like the Calypso Mini AB wind sensor, which feeds live wind data into AB Quantum.
Applied Ballistics was not exaggerating when it described itself as the go-to choice for electronics integration. By 2015 the company was already counting its 15th integration effort into different platforms, with more than 20,000 copies of its software sold and a bullet database past 400 entries. The current library covers more than 500 bullets with G1 and G7 data.
That is the thing Garmin now owns: the calculation layer that a meaningful share of the precision shooting industry runs on, including several companies Garmin competes with.
Why It Became the Standard
The reason the solver spread that widely is not marketing. It is that Bryan Litz did the science and published it.
Litz is a competitive shooter with national and international results in Palma competition, including the Queens Prize in Australia in 2010, and a member of a United States rifle team that won three world championships in the FTR class. More consequentially, his ballistic work moved the military sniper community from the older G1 drag model to the modern G7 standard, and got the Applied Ballistics solver integrated into numerous military and NATO devices. In 2019 he received the National Defense Industrial Association's Carlos Hathcock Award for contributions to small arms systems and US military capability.
That combination, a competitive shooter who publishes peer-reviewed-grade ballistic data, is why a Kestrel weather meter and a DARPA weapon optic ended up running the same code as a Garmin watch. The company's early material described its philosophy as exploring long range shooting "using the scientific method" against a world of "marketing hype and movie magic."
There is a useful data point on how thoroughly that worked: a 2024 survey found 79 percent of top PRS shooters were running a Kestrel 5700 or 5700X with Applied Ballistics. Eight in ten of the best precision rifle shooters in the country were relying on the same solver that Garmin just bought.
The Unbiased Part Just Got Complicated
Applied Ballistics was founded on being the neutral reference point for an industry full of competing claims. That position is difficult to maintain from inside a consumer electronics company that sells tactical watches.
It is not impossible. Companies operate owned subsidiaries at arm's length all the time, and Garmin has an obvious interest in Applied Ballistics remaining the standard, because a solver nobody trusts is worth much less than one everybody uses. If Garmin restricts access or degrades third-party support, it damages the asset it just paid for, and the competitive response would be quick.
But neutrality is a perception, and perception is what a reference standard trades on. Applied Ballistics' credibility came partly from not belonging to anyone in particular.
This Is the Pattern for Garmin Now
Garmin has spent 2026 buying software rather than building it. In July the company acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, bringing coaching platforms in-house. Now it owns the ballistics engine behind its tactical lineup.
The logic is consistent. Garmin makes excellent hardware and, historically, has been content to partner for the software layer. The company's recent moves suggest it has decided that the software layer is where the differentiation and the recurring revenue live, and that licensing it from someone else means competing with a ceiling.
For a company whose watches now carry an assistant, a subscription tier and a health platform, that is a coherent strategic shift. It just happens to have landed squarely on an industry where Garmin is not the biggest customer of the thing it bought.
What It Means for Kestrel, Sig Sauer and Bushnell
This is the open question, and Garmin has not addressed it.
Three plausible outcomes, none of them confirmed. The simplest is that existing licensing arrangements continue unchanged, because they are contracts and contracts survive acquisitions. A middle path is that they continue but stop being a priority, with Applied Ballistics' development effort increasingly aimed at Garmin's own products. The worst case for those companies is that a competitor's parent controls the roadmap for a core feature of their flagship products and eventually either raises prices or stops renewing.
Kestrel is the most exposed, since Applied Ballistics is central to the 5700 Elite rather than a nice extra. A Kestrel weather meter measures atmosphere, but the solver is what turns those measurements into a firing solution, and the "with Applied Ballistics" branding is part of why shooters pay the premium.
For balance, Garmin has no track record of strangling acquired software companies, and doing so here would be self-defeating. Applied Ballistics is valuable precisely because Kestrel, Sig and Bushnell users rely on it.
What Actually Changes for Owners
For anyone using a Garmin tactix, Foretrex 701 or the Applied Ballistics apps, probably nothing in the short term. The solver keeps working, AB Quantum keeps working, and the ten-year relationship Garmin cited suggests the integration was already tight.
The direction of travel matters more than any single change. A solver that was licensed to everyone and improved for everyone is now an asset inside one company. Expect Garmin's watches to get features from that relationship first, expect those features to be a bigger part of how the tactical line is marketed, and expect the Ballistics Edition question to come up. Bottom Line
Garmin acquired Applied Ballistics, the company founded by Bryan Litz in 2009 that turned G7 drag modeling into the industry standard and a Carlos Hathcock Award into a business. Garmin has licensed its solver for nearly a decade and bought the company outright on September 16 for undisclosed terms.
The parts of the portfolio that used to make Applied Ballistics neutral are now owned by one of the companies using it. Kestrel, Sig Sauer and Bushnell all sell products whose core calculation runs on Garmin's new subsidiary, and Garmin has said nothing about what happens to them. Whatever it decides, the days of the entire precision shooting market relying on one independent reference solver are over.
