Apple Watch SOS Leads to Backcountry Rescue // Satellite Connectivity Will Save Lives

Introduction

In a dramatic rescue last week, three backcountry skiers were saved by helicopter near Stevens Pass, Washington, after an Apple Watch sent an SOS alert. This incident underscores the life-saving potential of modern smartwatches—particularly when equipped with satellite connectivity—in remote, high-risk scenarios. When the skiers found themselves in an area without cell service, the Apple Watch’s satellite SOS feature proved essential for contacting rescuers.

The Incident

Three backcountry skiers were exploring an area near Stevens Pass when disaster struck:

  • Falls and Injuries: Two of the skiers fell—one tumbling about 1,000 feet, the other about 500 feet. One sustained a broken leg, while the other suffered a twisted knee and a broken wrist. The third skier remained unharmed but was isolated with the injured pair.
  • No Cell Service: With no cellular coverage in the mountains, the skiers faced a dire situation, unable to call or text through standard means.

SOS Alert via Apple Watch

    1. Activation: One of the skiers managed to activate the Apple Watch SOS feature, which can send a distress signal via satellite when cell networks are unavailable.
    1. Response: The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office received the SOS, which indicated a leg injury and an urgent need for rescue.
    1. Rescue Operation:
    • Helicopter Dispatch: The King County Sheriff’s Office deployed two helicopters, Guardian 1 and Guardian 2.
    • Location: Using heat sensors, the helicopter crew located the skiers in steep terrain amidst dense trees.
    • Nighttime Extraction: With darkness setting in, the pilots and crew navigated challenging conditions. A rescuer was lowered to secure and hoist the injured skiers into the helicopter.
    • Medical Transport: The injured were transported to a Seattle hospital for treatment.

The Role of the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch’s SOS alert feature was the linchpin in this successful rescue. Newer Apple devices allow users to connect via satellite for emergency help, mirroring similar devices like the Garmin inReach.

  • Improved Detection: Apple has continually refined its fall detection and crash detection features, making the watch more sensitive to sudden impacts, abnormal heart rates, and other emergencies.
  • Automatic Calls: If the watch detects a severe fall and the user doesn’t respond, it can automatically call emergency services.
  • Manual SOS: Users can also send an SOS by pressing and holding the side button or the Action button on Apple Watch Ultra models.

How to Use the Apple Watch SOS Feature

    1. Press and hold the side button (below the Digital Crown).
    1. When the Emergency Call slider appears, either drag it to place the call or keep holding the button.
    1. After a short countdown, the watch automatically contacts emergency services and sends location data.

Video of the Rescue

The King County Sheriff Air Support unit shared footage of the nighttime rescue on their social media account. The video captures the helicopter locating the skiers, one waving to guide rescuers, and the dramatic hoisting of the injured skiers to safety.
